How PEERS® for Young Adults Makes a Difference
As the facilitator of the PEERS® for Young Adults course, I have had the privilege of witnessing countless young people transform their social lives. One recent story stands out, highlighting the profound impact that dedication and the right support can have on a young adult navigating the complexities of social interactions.
When this particular family enrolled their 20-year-old son in our PEERS® course, they did so with a significant commitment of time, effort, and resources.
Their son, diagnosed with Autism, faced social challenges common to many young people with this diagnosis. I am always humbled by the trust families place in our program, and I strive to honor that trust by providing the highest quality instruction and support.
The true magic of the PEERS® program lies in the connections it fosters among participants. Despite the physical distance, this family participated via Zoom from another state, and the wonders of modern technology ensures our weekly sessions, as well as the practice phone calls or video calls that participants make with each other outside of the sessions, are generally smooth and seamless. By the end of the course, the participants are not only learning the material but also encouraging and supporting each other. This sense of community is integral to the program's success and something I diligently cultivate in every session.
One of the core strengths of the PEERS® program is its focus on practical, actionable skills. We break down complex social interactions into manageable steps. For instance, handling disagreements involves a clear, six-step process, with apologising strategically placed at step five. This methodical approach helps demystify social situations, making them more approachable for our participants.
For this family, the transformation in their son was nothing short of remarkable. From struggling with social interactions to developing a structured process for handling various social situations, he emerged from the course with newfound confidence. His ability to navigate social landscapes improved significantly, which is a testament to his hard work and the program's efficacy.
